Augmented reality is a technology that goes beyond the screen and into your world. Developers are turning to augmented reality hardware in order to create innovative experiences for users. With all of this new hardware being released, developers need to have an understanding of what hardware they will need. If you are looking at creating an augmented reality application, make sure you read this article as it will help you understand hardware requirements.

For augmented reality development you will need the following hardware:

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Super, AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT, or equivalent.
  • CPU with a minimum clock speed of 3.5GHz.
  • SSD with 512GB storage.
  • 16GB RAM.
  • Android phone (S6+) with the latest OS installed.

Let’s look at why we need special hardware requirements for AR development and what components make the biggest difference.

Graphics Card

A high-end graphics card will be one of the most important components in augmented reality (AR) application development, ensuring that models render real-time. We recommend that you have a dedicated graphics processing unit with at least 8GB of vRAM. Our recommendations are: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Super, AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT, or equivalent.

CPU (Processor)

When modeling your 3D assets, be sure to have a desktop that has superior clock speed. A powerful CPU that can handle high clock speeds will over-all perform better and consume more power. We recommend a minimum clock speed of 3.5GHz.

One of the primary things your computer needs for augmented reality app development is a good CPU. CPU rendering offers multiple cores to handle the more complicated workload, so having a machine with as many cores as possible is ideal.

SSD

Opting for a solid state drive over an HDD will make development with augmented reality more efficient. We will recommend you go for at least 512GB storage – and an extra external hard drive for back-up.

Memory (RAM)

Game development will consume a lot of RAM, especially if you’re working cross-platform and will find yourself with Photoshop, Illustrator, Blender, and Unity all open up at the same time. We recommend you get a laptop with at least 16GB of RAM.

Android Phone

Since we are developing for Android, we are going to need an Android phone (S6 or later) with the latest operating system on it.
